Giving Books a Second Life: The Success of GCPL’s Recycling Program

Earlier this year, the Gaston County Public Library launched a book recycling partnership with Good Steward Ministries — and what a difference it’s made. In just seven months, from February through August 2025, 37,703.75 pounds of books —that’s over 19 tons — have been diverted from the Gaston County landfill.

Instead of ending up as waste, these books are being sorted, repurposed, or redistributed, giving them a second life in new hands and new places. The program has quickly become a quiet success story, running smoothly behind the scenes thanks to thoughtful coordination and community support. Library staff and Friends of the Library volunteers alike say the effort has changed the way they feel about discarding withdrawn or damaged materials. There’s genuine relief — and even pride— in knowing that the books are being responsibly recycled rather than tossed away.

As the program continues, the Library remains committed to sustainability and stewardship, ensuring that every book serves its purpose — right up to the very end of its shelf life.

2025 Book Sale

Our 2025 Friends of Gaston County Public Library Book Sale was a HUGE success!

Thank you to everyone who came out in support of the library at this year’s sale.  Because of your generosity and support, we were able to raise $44,000 for the Gaston County Public Library!  We appreciate everyone who stood in line and braved the crowds to show your support.  We are excited to begin work on next year’s sale!

Why Recycle Books?

While Gaston County’s mixed paper program accepts paperbacks and magazines, hardback books previously posed a challenge. Up to 540 gallons of materials were being dumped into the landfill weekly! By recycling, we’re not only reducing waste but also honoring our commitment to be responsible stewards of both county resources and the environment.

The Donation Dilemma

We love the enthusiasm of those who donate books for our fundraising efforts. These donations are vital to our mission. However, they can sometimes include items better suited for a museum—or the recycling bin—than a book sale.

Mid-century “Encyclopedia Britannica” sets and attic-stored treasures complete with unexpected wildlife are among the frequent finds. And while we appreciate the nostalgia, some donors insist that these materials still hold valuable information. We do our best to educate donors with kindness and humor while adhering to our donation policy.

Book Sales: Balancing Perception and Value

Selling discarded library books can also stir debate. Some question why high-quality items sell for as little as a dollar, but affordable pricing ensures these items find a new home while raising funds to support our library’s programs and services.

Thank You for Supporting Our Efforts

Whether you’re a member of the Friends, donor, a book sale enthusiast, or a recycling advocate, your support helps us serve the community while protecting the environment. Together, we’re turning the page on waste and writing a more sustainable future for Gaston County.
